My experience in making a Black Blythe … this is NO TUTORIAL, just a field report and I am not able to support you making a Black Blythe. You need to try yourself

How to make a Black Blythe (Field report, no tutorial)
First of all get some SEM paint from Ebay USA, all other colour will peel off the legs (I tried it myself, trust me, it hurts when this happens to your Blythe after all that work!!). To prepare the parts, sand everything gently even the body with fine sanding paper. Wash the parts with oilfree soap and hang up the body (see pic below) somewhere outside. Shake your SEM well and spray parts and body carefully.
A tip I read at LouLouBlue’s great BB tutorial which is no longer available afak is to spray less paint in many coats. The risk painting the whole body at once is it won’t dry! I am pretty impatient and spray the 3-5 coats a body every 30 minutes and it works for me. But make sure the paint isn’t sticky anymore before adding a new coat!

Once you are done and happy with the coating let her dry a day and a night to be sure. In case the legs stay sticky use some baby powder to absorb humidity. (Yes, it works!)
If you have problems with Takara bodies that don’t dry my advice is to use Licca or ADG bodies instead.
That’s it! Get her some cool mohair or something you like, weft or reroot her scalp, paint her lips, make her up and taadaaaa… Black Blythe is done!
Have fun trying yourself!

so pretty!
What color SEM paint did you use on her?
@Zanalee: I picked my fave colour on their colour chart. I recommend you to do the same. Just make them send you their chart.

HI, I did a custom Blythe using sem cordovan brown and it was great everywhere except the legs because they remained sticky! Did you find that? I asked Sem about it and they said it was because the solvant was too strong for the vinyl!
yes, I had that problem too on Takara legs, don’t know why! When you wait longer they seem to be dry but with clothes on they stick… I use ADG odies and it works much better!
I need to make a Black Blythe for my best friend who has always wanted one. Thanks for the tip! Now I have a purpose for one of the extra un-loved girls in my family…
Unloved!? Nawww!
You are welcome, Tiff! My thought was it is a great idea to turn neglected girls into the center of interest but well… now I miss my neglected girl :S
XD
AWWW! I am sure Tiff’s girls are all loved but some are just neglected!
I was wondering did you use the same paint on the face plate? Since SEM was for rubber and not plastic I wondered if it would have an effect on the plastic face plate?? ^.^
yes, I use SEM also on the plate. It worked well for me
I used Cordovan Brown on my Black Blythe (A Takara) as well and it worked great on the face and the torso as well but not so great on the legs which seemed to never dry and remained sticky. So I bought a Licca on ebay but didn’t like it when it arrived, so I traded it in with someone for an ADG. I’m so excited to try this one since it sounds like and ADG body will be more successful. I will try to be patient and spray in layers but I’m afraid if I do that the paint might come out uneven on her body.
Don’t worry, the coats are so fine, you won’t see something afterwards!
GOOD LUCK!!!! YAY!
Hello

I am about to start my bb custom and I have the silliest questions..
First of all, what kind (grit?) of sanding paper is recommended on the body? I got and ADG body ready! But I have never sand-matted any of my dolls so I have no clue
Thanks for this tutorial, Jasz!
Well, you are welcome
Mar, you need to get the finest grain at »coolcat’s and follow »my sanding tutorial just that your head is open already. Just do it ;P
Thanks! I thought maybe the body needed a different grit than the head..
I will get the microfine then
